About The Community Dinner
I chose to volunteer at the Dryden United Methodist Church Community Dinner held on April 15th, 2015. The start of this program was mainly through a mere suggestion at an Outreach Committee meeting held at the United Methodist Church around seven and a half years ago. The topic rose discussion and it was then decided hosting this community dinner would most benefit those whom are hungry and other main guests who often eat alone and subjected to not preparing a proper nutritious meal, eating in front of mild entertainment such as a TV, and overall a loss of socialization. While I volunteered, the jobs I participated in included preparing the garlic bread, slicing vegetables for salads, serving dessert to guests, and clean-up work.
Participating in this event made it clear how hard it is to create healthy and nutritious meals when a majority of the attendance are those who can only eat foods that are not always as nutritionally sound. Though the committee is constantly trying their best to make the meals as healthy as can be, budget setbacks and attendee setbacks are major obstacles. I was happy I was able to be apart of this event and learn about the obstacles that come with combating food insecurity in a real life setting.
